NDIS

What is NDIS?

NDIS (National Disabilities Insurance Scheme) aims to build independence, increase opportunities and social participation for people with disability.

About NDIS

NDIS provides individualised support for people with disability, their families, and their carers.
Key points for providers are:
  • People with disability choose the providers they work with
  • Over 460,000 Australians with disability will enter the NDIS in coming years
  • There are growth opportunities for providers who respond to this demand
  • Resources/tools are available to help providers adjust to this environment.

Eligibility

Eligibility for NDIS funding depends upon following conditions:
  • If you are aged between 7 and 65 years
  • If you are a permanent resident or citizen of Australia, or if you hold a special category visa
  • If you are relying on support from another person due to a permanent and significant disability
  • If you have been using special equipment due to a permanent and significant disability
  • If you need some supports now to reduce your future needs.

What is funded by NDIS?

The NDIS funds a range of supports and services which may include education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements and health and well-being. In order to be considered reasonable and necessary, a support or service must be related to a participant's disability.

What isn't funded by NDIS?

The NDIS will not fund:
  • Supports that are not related to a person’s disability
  • Supports that are funded by a different mechanism or system, such as Medicare or the Health system
  • Day-to-day living costs that everyone pays for such as food, electricity and water bills
  • Things that may cause harm.

How are NDIS support plans developed?

NDIS plans are created through a personalised planning process in which a participant collaborates with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or NDIA planner to determine their objectives, requirements, and preferred supports. The plan specifies the financial assistance as well as the funding amounts assigned to the participant.

Can I change my NDIS plan?

Yes, NDIS plans are evaluated on a regular basis, and adjustments to the plan can be made if your circumstances or requirements change. If you want more or alternative supports, we can seek a plan review through the NDIA.

What is Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is a capacity building support, which helps you to understand and use your NDIS plan to pursue your goal – we can:
  • Connect you with NDIS providers
  • Connect you with community, mainstream and other government services
  • Build your confidence and skills to use and coordinate your supports.

Can I use NDIS funds for travel/transport?

Yes, if it is connected to your disability assistance requirements – the NDIS can give funds for travel and transportation. This might involve transportation to and from appointments or to community participation.

What happens if I move to a different state or region?

If you relocate to another state or region, your NDIS plan and funds will be moved to the new location, and you will continue to get your funded supports.
